GALS Program

The Girls as Leaders in STEM (GALS) program run by Deakin University led a program and project that was fostering young girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Who was involved?

Katie, Tahni, Ruby, Tayla, Liv, Onyx - we are all from year 8.

What did you do at Deakin workshops?

We looked at problem solving skills, how to work well in a team, and some of the problems in the world.

What was your project?

Our project was to make blankets out of old clothes people don't use anymore to donate it to GAWS. We did this to reduce the amount of landfill that throwing out our old clothes produces.

What positive things did you get out of it?

We made some friendships. We learnt more about reducing pollution and how we can do it in a sustainable way.

We presented our findings and prototype at Costa Hall last week at the GALS Launch. The poster we made explaining our design was up at Waurn Ponds shopping center during the school holidays.

Thank you to Ms. Snookes who supervised and guided us on our project!
