Saint Ignatius College Geelong
Dear Saint Ignatius College Geelong Community Members,
Student Leadership
One of our mantras is “St Ignatius. Inspiring me to be a leader.” This mantra is based on the belief that all our students can be leaders. As educators and parents, our ultimate goal is to prepare our students for future success in life so they can be positive and constructive influencers who make a difference for the better. At an Ignatian school, our leadership model is the ‘servant leader.’ We are about developing well-rounded students with well-developed competencies, with a well-formed conscience to guide them. We expect that they will unleash their potential to influence others for a better world – women and men for others prepared to love and serve (‘Amare et Servire’) for the ‘Greater Glory of God (AMDG.)’
I am delighted to announce the College Senior Student Leaders for 2023. Congratulations to the following students:
College Captains | Matilda Stepto Ross de Lange |
College Vice Captains | Amy Thompson Zac Dwyer |
Academic Captain | Curtis McCoughtry |
Arts Captain | Zoe Walter |
Environment Captain | Paddy Noble |
Justice Captain | Alana Clark |
Ministry Captain | Madison Duncan |
Sports Captain | Chloe Hobbs |
Wellbeing Captain | Charlotte Punton |
Other leadership roles are being finalised. House Captains, Vice Captains and SRC members will be decided later this week and will be published at a later date.
I am grateful to our Acting Student Leadership Development Coordinator, Ms Robyn Frigo, for planning and managing the selection process. The formal induction will be held at the beginning of next year.
I also congratulate the other Year 10 & 11 students who applied for a position and missed out. It was very encouraging that many of our students showed interest in taking on a leadership position, and the selection panel and I were very impressed with the applications.
Strong and positive senior student leadership has an important influence on the tone and climate of a school. Each year I endeavour to impress upon our Yrs 11 & 12 students that each can influence, particularly the younger students, the climate other students experience by how they relate with others and the modelling they provide. Those with a ‘badge’ have a very public duty to uphold the College values and, by word and deed, contribute to a positive culture that will enhance our learning and faith community, resulting in better outcomes for all students.
It is important to acknowledge the contribution of the current Captains, who will continue in their role until the end of this school year. I thank all of them; they have been tremendous role models for the rest of our students.
College Captains | Emily Green Sam Hines |
College Vice Captains | Audrey Hughan Toby Mew |
Academic Captain | Amy Thompson |
Arts Captain | Lily Petterwood |
Environment Captain | Matilda Stepto |
Justice Captain | Erika Slevin |
Liturgy Captain | Ella Beasley |
Sport Captain | Luke Fraser |
Wellbeing Captain | Ross de Lange |
Best wishes,
Michael Exton

The 2022 VCE Leadership Awards are coordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) to recognise VCE students for their leadership, initiative and involvement in extra-curricular and community activities.
The 2022 VCE Leadership Awards Ceremony was held in Melbourne on Friday 16 September. Toby Mew, 12 Garnett, was recognised for his leadership skills and his contributions to our College and the wider community. From a selection of VCE students from the state Toby was able to make it to the final 8 students who were recognised at the ceremony. Toby addressed the gathered crowd and spoke about his involvement in the Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education (FIRE) carrier program and his work in initiatives supporting gender equality, asylum seekers and the promotion of the wider College community.
Toby was accompanied to the ceremony by Mr. Pannuzzo and Mr. Brown along with his parents Linda and Stephen. While Toby was not the winner overall, we are very proud of his achievements and the recognition that he has received.
Mr. Brown | VCE Coordinator
Koling Wada-ngal
From Monday 10th to Friday 14th of October, Saint Ignatius College, Sacred Heart, Clonard and St Joseph’s Colleges are excited to launch Koling Wada-ngal, which means ‘Let’s Walk Together’ in Wadawurrung language.
Koling Wada-ngal is about promoting greater recognition and appreciation of First Nations culture, and reconnecting the school community with the rich and diverse heritage and land of the Bellarine Peninsula.
Drysdale is rich in First Nation's history. Within the Wadawurrung territory, there were 27 clans. The Bengalat Balug clan occupied the eastern Bellarine Peninsula, including Drysdale. During the construction of the Drysdale overpass, next to Saint Ignatius College, a plethora of First Nation's artifacts were discovered that were over 5000 years old, mostly being tools – this indicates the extraordinary amount of undiscovered history that lies within a stone’s throw of our College alone. During Koling Wada-ngal, we hope to pass on some of this history.
On Tuesday 11th October, we will be having a casual clothes day requiring a gold coin donation. Staff and students are asked to wear the colours of their favourite Marn Grook (football) Club.
There are a number of activities that will be run during the week.
At lunchtime on Tuesday, staff and students can stoke their competitive fires participating in a Staff vs Students Marn Grook footy match on the oval. Just come along, whether to watch or play, and join in the atmosphere!
If you are a keen artist, we are excited to be running an arts activity at lunchtime on Wednesday. Students are welcome to come to the arts rooms and participate in putting together a piece on canvas, utilising a First Nation's perspective, that may be displayed when completed!
On Thursday, staff and students are invited to participate in a walk around the College’s natural areas. A map will be released on Monday that marks a trail that students may walk around. This is a great opportunity to switch off and enjoy the fresh air, and take your mind off your day! The meeting place at lunchtime will be on the oval behind the gym, where a group of people will walk together on the marked trail. Teachers are welcome to take their classes around the track in their own time as well!
Thank you for all your support, we hope that you get behind the spirit of the week and are able to learn something new!

PERFORMANCE AND INSTRUMENTAL NEWS
TRI-UMPH
The original plans Tri-UMPH for the combined Catholic Colleges was sadly cancelled due to Covid, but Saint Ignatius decided to have their own mini Tri-UMPH which was a huge success.
On Friday, September 9th music students performed during recess and lunchtime to staff and students. The basketball court area came alive as the year 9, 10, 11 and 12 bands entertained the appreciative crowd.
CLARINET MEGA DAY
On the last Sunday of the school holidays, clarinet students, Emily O’Kane and Fin Hanley, attended the Clarinet Mega Day at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University with their teacher Mrs. Janice Wilding and Mr Michael Wilding.
The day consisted of all participants playing in a large clarinet choir of more than 50 players, masterclasses, question forum and performances. It was hosted by Associate Professor in Music (Performance-Clarinet) David Griffiths. He was joined by Eloise Fischer (Tasmanian Symphony), Phillip Arkinstall (Melbourne Symphony), Paul Champion (Orchestra Victoria) and Jose Franch-Ballaster (University of British Columbia, Vancouver). It was a long day but a fantastic opportunity to hear from leading clarinet experts and other student performers at both a school and university level.
Emily was fortunate to play in the masterclass with David and received some positive feedback for her upcoming VCE performance exam.
NEW BAND ROOM
The Music Department has now acquired the old staffroom portable and now have this setup as a permanent band room. All concert band and stage band rehearsals will now take place in this space as well as the Year 7 music classes. We are fortunate to have our own space and more time can be spent rehearsing rather than moving chairs and setting up the room.

Thursday 8th September saw the annual ‘R U OK? Day’ come and go here at Saint Ignatius College and around the nation. In response to one family’s heartbreaking tragedy, and founded back in 2009, R U OK? is a “harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives.”
Honouring the fundamental R U OK? concepts of care, compassion and connection, themes explored by staff and students during last Tuesday’s Mentor Time included understanding what it’s like to not only hear, but actively and reflectively listen; how to recognise and take charge over positive and negative self-talk (because not only can we ask others RUOK?, but we can ask ourselves too); and how effective and mindful self care strategies might be engaged when life invariably throws its challenging curveballs our way.
Considering that the average person hears between 20,000 and 30,000 words over the course of a 24 hour period, it’s perhaps not surprising that we might miss the anguished words of friends and loved ones telling us that they are distressed and struggling. Filtering out what’s not important and tuning in to what really matters can be much easier said than done. Learning to not only hear but authentically listen to others, remembering to remain alert and check in with our friends and loved ones, picking up on signs that they might be struggling, can be not only powerful and life changing but life saving. It’s worth it.
On a lighter but no less powerful note, the Saint Ignatius annual RUOK Day staff/student dodgeball event was, as always, a big hit…with some hits apparently packing more of a punch than others! The high energy on-court rivalry left at least some of our brave Wellbeing Team taking a couple of days to recover! Look out students, staff will be upping their game for next year! Bring it!
Cracking cipher codes, racing around secret locations on campus and ultimately revealing the mystery sentence was the lunchtime RUOK Day Treasure Hunt challenge taken up by our Year 7 and 8 students. Participants energetically engaged, with four super speedy winners ultimately taking out the highly sought-after major prize of CHOCOLATE!
Last but by no means least, a HUGE shout out to the awesome and talented culinary artists who treated us all to some amazing R U OK? Day cookies…who doesn’t love chocolate and choc chip cookies?! They were definitely more than OK…they were delicious! Is it OK to say we’re already looking forward to next year’s R U OK? Day cookies?
